Rights for incarcerated father...?

My fiance who is incarcerated currently informed me that he was served with adoption papers from his daughters mom's parents. The mother of his daughter died in March and the little girl lives with her grandparents. Well looks like not they are trying to adopt her. What can he do? He doesn't want to give her up in fact he was thinking about getting custody of her or at least visitation rights once he gets out of incarceration in November. He is willing to take parenting cles and agree to drug tests weekly...daily...whatever it takes. On the papers the court date is August 1st but he's going to still be incarcerated when that day comes. His charges are all drug related...no violence or child abuse what so ever. Any opinions/advice?
