Star Trek fans, how do you explain this inconsistency?

I never saw the pilot, but if I had to venture a guess it was just because warp drives weren't in m production yet. They had the one prototype that left the warp signature that the Vulcans picked up on, and maybe a few more after that. But as I mentioned, I never saw the pilot as I was never all that interested in the newest Star Trek series.
